How are wood pellets made ?

At this particular pellet plant they are turning whole logs into fuel pellets. As they wish to meet to criteria for a premium grade product they first remove the bark from the logs, this bark is then sold to a mulch manufacturer. The logs are then chipped and fed into a walking floor silo. The silo will then feed the chips into the pellet plant when requested to do so. Next the chips pass down a conveyor over a magnet. This is a good safety feature as it not only reduces the risk of sparks and fire it also protects the pellet mill die from potential damage. To make sure the drying process produces consistent results the chips are first processed through a hammer mill. A triple pass rotary drum dryer is used to reduce the moisture content of the chips down to below 15%. These chips however are still too large for the pellet mill and must be reduced further through a second hammer mill. The milled wood fiber is then placed in a conditioner, which in tern will feed the pellet press.

A large ring die pellet maker is used which is controlled through a computer and monitored by the plant operator. The formed wood pellets are now sieved and cooled from two hundred degrees down to ninety degrees. In this particular wood pellet manufacturing plant they are using the fines collected from the pellets to fuel the dryer, in other plants they recycle the fines back into the process to produce more pellets. They also have an aspirator which will remove any remaining dust, this is essential as premium grade pellets can only contain a very small percentage of fines in the product to meet the certification.
